The opening of a new BMX track could lead to a surge in popularity of the sport in New Plymouth sooner rather than later.
With the opening of the new $600,000 track in Bell Block, New Plymouth BMX rider Victoria Hill said she expected the sport to attract more interest now the region had a world class facility.
“It’s basically indescribable how much will help our riders,” Hill said.
While the track won’t officially open until September, sponsors and supporters were told the track was ready to be used on sunday morning.
Hill, who had competed around the globe in the sport, said she was eager to get out onto the track, and was planning to host some coaching sessions on it once it was officially open.
“Both kids and adults will be able to progress so fast now.
“I’ve already got a few kids wanting training on it so I’m pretty keen to get out there.”
Hill said from what she had seen the track was looking good and the eight-metre hill on the course was a big factor in improving local riders.
“Now we’ve got something similar to what you’d ride on in the rest of the world.”
“Our old track use to be quite stop start and we’ve still had some really good riders for a long time. So now I think we’ll see even more good riders come through.”
Although there were still additions to be made, including a second starting ramp, the track was ready for the New Plymouth BMX club to begin training on.
Hill said she expected the new track to bring in a whole new crowd of riders.
“Especially with the location it’s in. It’s good that it’s right next to the velodrome and the walkway.”
