When was club established? The club was established in 1974. 2014 is our 30th anniversary. The new track “Cambridge Road BMX / MTB Track Park” opened in December 2011.
What ages does your club cater for? The clubs has licensed riders from 4yrs to 65 years.
What are the facilities and track like? Designed by Olympian Kurt Pickard and Life Member Ash Rawson the facility is of an international standard with asphalt start ramp and massive berms (corners). Our command centre/club rooms were completed for the Nationals.
The track was built and is maintained 100% by club members with financial assistance from charitable trusts and community sponsors. We have a Progate style safety gate with locally designed software
Do you have a loyal bunch of parents? Very much so. Our club, let alone the National Championships, would not exist without this core group of members and parents.
How do you attract new members? We continually promote the club through local media and encourage new membership with a trial period to ensure they enjoy themselves before committing to a membership. We host an annual ‘have a go’ month which is run in conjunction with Sport BOP and Bike Wise during National Cycling month.
Club training is done during summer – Sprockets (under 8yrs) Wednesday evenings, Intermediate & Senior’s Thursday evenings. Free for members. Coaches are elected annually from some of our most experienced riders, which is reflected in the results. Senior Coach – Ash Rawson (multiple World Championship medallist and life member with 8 National Titles). Intermediate Coach – Cody Stevens (2014 NZ Elite Champion!)
Do you have a development group? We have a strong committee who meet regularly. Promoting the club and developing the facility are always top of the agenda.
What competitions do you hold? We host an annual National Qualification race meeting, annual Club Champs, club nights (Tuesdays) during Summer, Club Days (Sundays) during Winter.
Do some of your club travel to compete? Anyone wanting to compete in the National Championships must complete at least 4 National Qualification meetings, which are hosted most weekends between September & March each year.
