Cycling New Zealand has confirmed Michael Bias, Rico Bearman and Bennett Greenough to compete in the UCI BMX World Championships in Papendal, Netherlands this weekend.
Bearman (North Harbour) and Greenough (Cambridge), part of the Schick Civil Construction BMX National Performance Hub, will be making their world championships debut as second year elite juniors while current national champion Bias will take on the elite category.
All three have taken advantage of the northern hemisphere summer racing circuit with Bearman basing himself in the US while Bias (also from the North Harbour club) and Greenough spent the summer in Europe.
Recent Olympian and current New Zealand Elite Women’s National Champion Rebecca Petch was also selected to the team alongside Schick Civil Construction BMX National Performance Hub rider Megan Williams however both have decided to bypass the championships.
The 2021 UCI BMX World Championships provide an exciting opportunity for racing on the world stage after the 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid-19, however it is not without precautions with the Challenge Championships being cancelled.
The 2021 BMX World Championships will be held in Papendal, Netherlands on 21-22 August.
Training sessions will take place on Friday and Saturday 20-21th August qualification motos and finals on Sunday 22d August which is open for public under Covid-19 measures.
