Labour Weekend saw Cambridge BMX Team Nelson Brothers Racing (NBR) winning back its own company-sponsored corporate shield for the fourth time in its 19-year history.
The team pulled out the great win at the 2015 North Island BMX titles held by the Taupo BMX Club over the holiday weekend.
Team members rode well over the weekend, with the two youngest riders – Brock Nelson and Kobi Russell – winning all four of their qualifying heats on the first day.
The next day started badly with Brock crashing and injuring his arm, all but taking him out of the event. The rest of the team held firm and battled on to their respective finals.
Their combined efforts resulted in them winning the Nelson Brothers Racing Corporate Shield, awarded to the top team of five riders with the best results in the final on Sunday.
This is the fourth time Team NBR have won this trophy – the most of any team in the history of the Shield, putting NBR back at the top as New Zealand’s most frequent BMX winners.
The results saw Steve Shimanski coming in first, Sara Pickin second, Caleigh Miller third, Kobi Russell sixth, Brock Nelson eleventh, and Kaylah Nelson ninth.
Team owner and coach Boyd Nelson thanked sponsors Leamington Auto Electric, A1 Lawn Mowing, and Waikato Dairy Builders, as well as Chris La Pine from Cambridge Physio and Acupuncture for helping get two of the riders fit to compete in short time, and keeping them going through the competition.
